I too am having the error. I just installed the brand new version 3.1.12. I have updated to Latest Module Upcoming events Module 3.5.

Rendering Error in layout Attachment/Item: Property "protected" is not defined. Please enable debug mode for more information.

We found through working on harleylever's site that the issue, which had already been fixed, was happening on his site still due to configuration being set to link event titles to the details article. When the title links to registration, this was working just fine and the link was removed. We fixed this details article title link on Harley's site and will put that in the next package update.
